What is EMDR therapy?

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a highly researched therapy that only clinicians with specialized training can provide.

The skilled therapists at Thrive Counseling Services, LLC provide EMDR in a structured manner where focus is put on a specific trauma memory (otherwise known as a target) while bilateral stimulation is occurring at the same time. Bilateral stimulation was originally delivered in the form of rapid eye movements. However, as researchers learn more, therapists now use a variety of ways to deliver bilateral stimulation, including tapping, buzzers, auditory tones, light bars, and more.

EMDR was first developed to treat PTSD in war veterans. Since its inception in the 1980s, it has expanded and is an effective modality for reprocessing all different types of traumas.

Who can benefit from EMDR?

Clients of all ages can benefit from EMDR. EMDR has been used to treat a variety of challenges that clients face, including, but not limited to:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Eating disorders
  • Dissociative disorders

How long does EMDR take?

The length of your EMDR therapy at Thrive Counseling Services, LLC depends on the severity of your trauma. Before making any treatment recommendations, your therapist completes a thorough evaluation and assessment to determine your needs and goals.

They talk to you about EMDR and how it may help you process and heal from past trauma. Some people see improvements after a few sessions, while others may need several months of EMDR to get the results they need.
