About Trauma

Trauma doesn’t always come from one event. It can be the buildup of painful experiences that never got fully processed; moments that live in your body, hijack your nervous system, or make you feel disconnected from who you are.

At Thrive Counseling Services, we understand trauma as something deeply personal. What hurt you doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. If it’s still affecting you, it matters.

Trauma Q&A

Common Signs of Trauma

Trauma refers to the emotional and mental health issues that occur after you experience a frightening, dangerous, or life-threatening event. You may also feel traumatized if you witness the event.

The most common traumatic events include:

  • Sexual assault
  • Physical abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Childhood neglect
  • Religious trauma
  • Domestic violence
  • Community violence (shootings)
  • Car crashes and other accidents
  • Robbery or household invasion
  • Death or serious illness of a friend or loved
  • Natural disasters (hurricanes, floods, earthquakes)

Children and teens may also experience trauma from being bullied or living in a household filled with ongoing stress and tension.

What disorders are associated with trauma?

Not all trauma looks like flashbacks or panic. Sometimes, it shows up as exhaustion, numbness, or a vague sense that something’s “off.” Trauma can impact how you think, feel, relate, and function.

Here are some signs you might be carrying trauma:

  • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares
  • Feeling hyper-alert, jumpy, or easily startled
  • Emotional numbness or disconnection
  • Avoiding people, places, or memories
  • Irritability or emotional outbursts that surprise you
  • A deep sense of shame or self-blame
  • Feeling stuck, frozen, or constantly overwhelmed
  • Chronic tension, stomach issues, or unexplained pain

Complex PTSD occurs when you experience more than one traumatic event. The same trauma could repeatedly occur (such as bullying, abuse, or multiple military deployments), or you could experience different traumatic events.

Your Experience of Trauma Is Valid
—Even If Others Don’t Get It

You don’t need to compare your trauma to anyone else’s. What happened to you matters, especially if it still lingers.

Trauma isn’t about how big the event was. It’s about how it changed you.

You’re not being dramatic. You’re being human, and you deserve space to heal.

How Thrive Counseling Services Supports Trauma Healing

Our trauma therapy focuses on helping you feel safe again: in your body, in your relationships, and in the world. We don’t push you to talk about anything you’re not ready to. Healing happens at your pace.

We use trauma-informed, body-aware approaches including:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy
  • Holistic care that may include lab work, lifestyle support, or coordination with our psychiatric nurse practitioner

Your trauma may live in both your mind and your nervous system. We’re here to care for both.

What to Expect in Trauma Therapy

The first step is simply creating safety. You don’t have to “relive” your trauma in therapy unless it feels helpful. We’ll work with your nervous system to build regulation, resilience, and reconnection.

You’ll never be rushed. You’ll never be judged. Just supported — every step of the way.
